Disciplinary Actions & Sanctions for Students
Students should carefully review the possible disciplinary actions described herein to assess the effects each action may have (i.e. the student’s standing with the college, special stipulations or restrictions, length of action, etc.). The action taken depends upon the severity of the violation, the degree of involvement of the student, the individual circumstances of each case, the student's conduct record, and the student’s academic progress. All conduct sanctions including suspensions, expulsions, and referrals for civil or criminal prosecution are consistent with local, state, and federal laws.
TYPES OF DISCIPLINARY ACTION
The actions are within the discretion of College disciplinary officials when a student is found to have violated College regulations or public laws:
- Charges Dropped. All written materials pertaining to the allegations against the individual are destroyed.
- Conduct Warning. A verbal warning given, followed by a thorough discussion of policies. Record is kept for one calendar year. If student is not involved in any other conduct situation during the calendar year following the warning, the record is then destroyed.
- Conduct Probation. This action is a formal probationary status during which the student is removed from good standing at the college. The probation may carry additional stipulations. Record is maintained for three (7) calendar years after the date of the last action taken, then destroyed.
- Strict Conduct Probation. This action is a formal probationary status very near suspension, during which the student is removed from good standing at the college. The probation may carry other restrictions and stipulations. The record is maintained for two (7) calendar years after the date of the last action taken, then destroyed.
- Suspension. This action indicates termination of student status for a period of time (for one or more semesters, depending upon the severity of the disciplinary situation) and exclusion from the College premises and activities. No academic credit can be earned or accepted on a transfer basis while a student is under suspension. A discipline record is maintained permanently.
- Interim Suspension. This action may be used to temporarily exclude a student from the college community when the student's action or threat of action indicates serious threat to the welfare and safety of persons or property. No hearing is necessary before the action is taken, but the College Grievance Committee will review the suspension within five school days of the effective date. A regular hearing may be held at a later date. If the suspension stands, the record is kept permanently.
- Expulsion. The action means permanent termination of student status. The record is maintained permanently.
