Admission Policies

Academic Forgiveness Policy | Auditing Courses | Readmission Policy

Students wishing to apply to Lakeview College of Nursing must have completed 45 or more semester credit hours of the coursework required for Lakeview’s BSN degree from a regionally accredited college or university, and must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. Applicants should also have a 2.5 science GPA which will be calculated by using the following science courses:  Anatomy & Physiology I & II, Chemistry I & II, and Microbiology.  Additionally, all transfer coursework must be at a “C” or higher in order to transfer into the LCN program.  Lakeview requires 60 credit hours in general education and prerequisite courses.

It is recommended that applicants have the Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology, Lifespan Development, and Nutrition requirements complete at the time of application.

Students who need decisions on admission status prior to the completion of 45 credit hours due to military service obligations may be granted admission with enrollment restrictions.  Full admission will be certified upon successful completion of all prerequisite and general education coursework and maintenance of a 2.5 GPA or better.

Prerequisite science courses needed for the nursing program (Anatomy & Physiology I & II, Chemistry I & II, and Microbiology) MUST be taken no more than 5 years prior to the start of the nursing program.  Courses taken prior to the 5 year limit must be repeated.  Practicing licensed RN students are exempt from the 5 year time limit.

All clinical courses in the Lakeview College of Nursing program must be taken within a six year period.  Those courses taken more than six years prior to a student’s graduation may no longer be valid.  If that is the case, the student will be asked to repeat the course(s).  This rule applies to ALL students of Lakeview College of Nursing including those readmitted to the program after a dismissal, withdrawal, or leave of absence.

Official transcripts from each institution attended must be submitted before admission will be considered.  International transcripts and credentials must be translated into English with letter grades and course descriptions as evaluated by a recognized agency specializing in such at the student’s expense before meeting with admissions staff.

All applicants must have established legal residency within the United States.  Lakeview College of Nursing does not issue I-20s for student visas and therefore requires each student to be either a U.S. Citizen or Permanent U.S. Resident.  Documentation will be required at the time of application.  An official copy of a U.S. birth certificate with an embossed seal is required for all applicants born within the United States.  A naturalization certificate or a copy of a green card may be used as documentation for those born outside the United States.  Students who were born outside the United States must also have the following:  official TOEFL scores sent directly from Educational Testing Services (ETS) with a TOEFL Score of 550 or better (paper test) or 80 (Internet Based Test: IBT).  In addition, the College carefully evaluates the four sub-scores (listening, structure/writing, speaking and reading) on the TOEFL test.  The College may require remediation, if one or more sub-score is/are substantially low, even though the total score is acceptable.

Students who feel strongly that their education meets our standards for exclusively English-based education (ideally a Bachelor's degree earned in the U.S.) may contact a recruiter well in advance of the application deadline if he/she would like to discuss their individual circumstances in consideration of exemption of the TOEFL requirement. Additionally, the following may be requested as documentation: official transcripts from U.S. High School showing education within the U.S., official transcripts from U.S. colleges showing proof of English requirements for the LCN program, and an electronic sample of a research paper that has been completed for a college course. Reporting on the authenticity of this paper may be provided by a resource outside the College (such as www.turnitin.com).

All applicants are required to return two references (e.g. recent employer, educator).

A personal composition of 150-250 words addressing the applicant’s view of nursing and individual goals is also required.

Upon receiving an admission decision, Lakeview College of Nursing will require that each student complete a background check.  This background check will be conducted as part of the routine intake process of all new students.  The Lakeview enrollment materials will include an inquiry about criminal convictions.  A new student who refuses to complete this section or does not answer truthfully and completely may not be allowed to enter the nursing program.  If the applicant has been convicted of any crime under the laws of any jurisdiction of the United States: which is a felony; or which is a misdemeanor, an essential element of which is dishonesty, or any crime which is directly related to the practice of the nursing profession, the applicant may be denied participation at clinical sites and may also be denied the opportunity to take the NCLEX-RN licensing exam following graduation.

All applicants who meet the criteria for admission will receive information about the required pre-admission test and on-line background check.  RNs are exempt from taking the pre-admission test.

Those wishing to take chemistry, statistics and/or medical terminology at Lakeview College of Nursing will be classified as “NON-DEGREE SEEKING STUDENTS.”  Non-degree seeking students are not eligible for Financial Aid.

Lakeview College of Nursing does not discriminate in the admission of students on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, sex, sexual orientation, religion, veteran status, marital status, ancestry, or disability.  Additionally, the College prohibits students discriminating against others based upon race, color, national origin, age, sex, sexual orientation, religion, veteran status, marital status, ancestry, or disability.

Admission to the College does not guarantee admission into the accelerated track.   Once students are admitted an individualized program plan will be developed. Progression through the program will require meeting certain competencies at each level before advancement to the next level of coursework.

Students will not be allowed to register for classes until all admission processes and paperwork are completed.

Academic Forgiveness Policy

Lakeview College of Nursing understands a student may have had difficult times in his/her life resulting in a sub-standard academic performance at a previous institution. This can cause the cumulative GPA to fall below the required 2.5/4.0 for admission into the college. Students who find themselves in this situation can write a statement asking the Admission's Committee to exclude this previous coursework from the cumulative GPA calculation. After the situation has been assessed and deemed appropriate, the cumulative GPA will then be figured using the last 48 credit hours of coursework, which must be a 2.5/4.0. However, any course in which a grade of "C" or better has been earned may be evaluated and accepted for transfer credit.

Auditing Courses

Students planning to audit a class may register on a space-available basis two weeks before the scheduled start date of the class. Auditing is for theory coursework only. Once the class has met, students may not change from audit to credit status or vice versa without written permission of the instructor. The fee for auditing is $50 per credit hour. If a student changes to credit status, the tuition rate in effect at the time will be assessed with no late registration fee applied.

Readmission Policy

A student who has academically been dismissed or who has withdrawn from the nursing program may apply for readmission. The readmission policies are:

  • A student who is academically dismissed is encouraged to schedule an appointment with the Dean of Nursing and complete an exit interview at the time of dismissal or withdrawal along with proper documentation.  Failure to complete the exit interview process may hinder the readmission process.
  • A student must request in writing to the Registrar to be considered by the Admission Committee according to the following schedule:
    • apply by July 1 for readmission into the fall semester;
    • apply by November 1 for readmission into the spring semester;
    • apply by April 1 for readmission into the summer semester.

Students will be notified by letter of the date their file will be reviewed by the Admission Committee. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure the nursing program has the correct mailing address.

  • A student’s application for readmission may be reviewed by the Admission Committee no more than two (2) times. If readmission is not granted after the second application, the student becomes ineligible for readmission.
  • If health concerns are a factor for the student leaving the College, then documentation for ability to continue in the program must be provided with readmission paperwork.
  • A student may only be readmitted into Lakeview College of Nursing once.
  • A student must meet all current admission criteria.
  • A student repeating a clinical nursing course must repeat both the theory and clinical components of the course.
  • The Admission Committee must approve any exceptions to the above policies.

A student who has failed a nursing course or who has withdrawn from the Nursing Program must submit the following documents to the Registrar to be considered by the Admission Committee for readmission:

  • Letter addressed to the Admissions Committee requesting readmission into (semester, year).
  • Recommendations from
    • Two (2) Lakeview Nursing Faculty who have taught the student in class or clinical and
    • One (1) additional professional recommendation.
    • Follow instructions on the attached Faculty Reference forms and submit them to the Registrar by due dates.
  • Develop a written action plan for success consisting of
    • Description of the reason(s) you left the program
    • Analysis of factors that lead to this outcome
    • Goals to be accomplished during your remaining time at Lakeview College of Nursing
    • Plan of action to meet your goal(s); be specific.

A student that is readmitted into Lakeview College of Nursing is required to meet the readmission course progression requirements. Any LCN classes that are being repeated due to a previous failure or withdraw must be passed with a "C" or higher. In order to remain in the program a student cannot withdraw or fail one of these courses.

A readmitted student is allowed to withdraw from one class that has not previously been taken. The remainder of the coursework must be passed with a "C" or higher. Graduation requirements must also be met as stated in the student handbok.

Readmission into Lakeview College of Nursing will be dependent on the clinical space available to accommodate additional students. If the number of applicants exceeds available space, the decision will be based on LCN GPA, admissions GPA, admissions science GPA and HESI (A2), and applicants may be deferred to a subsequent semester.

Re-admitted students will be required to update their criminal background check and drug screen before the first day of class. Check with the Records office regarding currency of immunizations, TB skin test, and CPR certification.

All clinical courses in Lakeview College of Nursing program must be taken within a six year period. Those courses taken more than six years prior to a student's graudation must be repeated. This rule applies to ALL students of Lakeview College of Nursing including those readmitted to the program after a dismissal, withdrawal, or leave of absence.
